This week’s spotlight for #inspiringCoveredwomen goes to…… A hijabi weightlifter, Kulsoom Abdullah. She also holds a PhD in computer engineering! Wow, she definitely holds that woman empowerment image.
She started doing weightlifting only as an exercise routine and she enjoyed doing it for fun. Somehow this exercise gave her something to achieve as a goal. So, she decided to have a trainer in which she trained for five to six days a week before she started competing. Now, she is the first female weightlifter from Pakistan when she completed at the 2011 World Championships.
However, it was not a smooth sailing journey for her, she had a “dress-code” battle with the International Weightlifting Federation. She is among the other female Muslim athletes that have been blocked from national and international competition due to their insistence on modest attire. But during her local competitions, she met no resistance from local weightlifting officials. Even the Washington-based Council on America-Islamic Relations supported her and showed great inclusion support.
And now thanks to her, athletes are now approved to #wearCovered.
Do you know she commented on our Instagram post where we featured her as our #coveredgirl of the week few days ago? Sakai and fangirling!
So, what do you think of Kulsoom Abdullah? Hmm.. Writing about her makes me want to try weightlifting too. But that can wait. I need to gain weight first! Hehe. Would you dare to try weightlifting?
