CbA’s next inspiring women feature is Carolyn Walker. First Muslim woman elected as Judge in the USA and also the first Judge to serve in the State of New York. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Business Administration from The Lincoln University of Pennsylvania, Juris Doctor from New York Law School and Master of Business Administration from the Zicklin School of Business of Baruch College. The reason why CbA pick her as this week’s feature is because she is an American African Muslim holding the most important career in the civil court.
Similarly in Brunei, our Attorney General is a woman too, Yang Berhormat Datin Seri Paduka Hajah Hayati binti Pengiran Orang Kaya Shahbandar Dato Seri Paduka Haji Mohd Salleh. Other than that, there are also a growing number of women in higher-ranking officials in both the government and private sector workforce. You know what this means… women is not necessarily born to do domestic household but what is happening now are like Carolyn Walker and our YB Datin Hajah Hayati as examples that women can be on the higher level in the workforce. Girl power! Hehe.
In 2015, she made history and caused an international firestorm when she took her ceremonial oath of office on Quran. Masya Allah, so fearless and inspiring. Not caring what the media will react to it as she is only doing what is right as a muslim which is for choosing Quran. It is a tradition in the court where judges or witnesses are sworn and take an oath using a holy book.
Carolyn Walker is the first woman who broke the tradition of having a Quran or any other religion to that matter to swear in court. Despite having a lot of controversy, she stood her belief, pursued and became a judge no matter the backlash she got. A great inspiration to all women out there because of she stands behind what she believes in. Alhamdulillah, we need more women like her in this world. Lets be inspired and feel inspire all the time.
