Brunei has achieved so many milestones for the past few years especially among Bruneian women. To name a few we have a female Attorney General who holds the same position as a minister, a female Deputy Minister in the ministry and in the Legislative Council. So, who do you think is CbA’s pick this week? I am pretty sure you have heard of her before…. ;)
Our third #CbAmpower for the month of February is……
Dk Najibah Eradah Pengiran Ahmad Mahdi Al-Sufri.
or better known as Brunei’s Polar Girl. Remember her? :D
Dk Najibah was the first Bruneian woman, together with other 800 candidates to take part in the Kaspersky Commonwealth Antarctic Expedition, to step and reach the South Pole on 29th December 2009.
I still remember that year was a historical year for Brunei as she successfully stepped and reached the South Pole. And it is very inspiring how she used her success to encourage fellow Bruneians to dream big.
“Never give up”
That was what she always says to fellow Bruneians. She did not have many supports from everyone when she planned to go to South Pole.
“Because I am a woman, people looked down on me.”
“Too freezing cold in Antarctica.”
“I was too short and small.”
People doubted her abilities just because all of the above and most importantly, because she is a woman. But that did not stop her. Prepared with her adventure spirit and commitment in environmental issues, she managed to go through the entire obstacle til the end of the expedition. Now… that’s what i call girl power!??
Oh, another fact about her too, she was awarded “Young Achiever Awards” by our beautiful HRH Princess Fadzilah Lubabul Bulqiah for being the first Bruneian woman to ski the South Pole.
Stereotyping should not stop us, especially women and young girls, to do what we dream and believe in. Dk Najibah is so passionate about environmental issues and hopes to use her involvement in the expedition to raise more awareness in Brunei about Global Warming and Climate Change. I also believe that we are still lacking awareness in global warming and climate change. It is a serious issue where it requires everyone to take part in order to reduce the risk.
for our children…
and for our future generation.
All in all, we need more girl power with empowerment image like her, not just in Brunei….. the World.
Never give up.
